The OIC Steering Committee on Youth and Sports held its first meeting on July 22, 2024, which was held virtually, headed by His Excellency Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al-Musaed, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports, in charge of Youth and Sports Affairs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which holds the presidency of the Islamic Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers (ICYSM).
Ambassador Tariq Ali Bakhit, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs, indicated in his speech on behalf of the Secretary-General that the Steering Committee represents an added value in the organization’s efforts in building the capabilities of young people, enhancing their participation, and in developing sports in the Islamic world. He stressed the pledge of the General Secretariat to ensure that the Committee plays a major role in this field by providing advice to the ICYSM and in following up on the implementation of the decisions and recommendations issued by the Conference, as well as monitoring the progress made in implementing the OIC Youth Strategy and the OIC Sports Development Strategy.
The Committee reviewed the efforts of member states in the three geographical regions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as the relevant OIC institutions in implementing the decisions issued by the 5th session of the Islamic Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers. The ICYF made a presentation on its implemented activities for the betterment of Muslim youth since the last ICYSM and submitted its recommendations to the Committee on the successful execution of the ICYSM decisions.
It should be noted that the Committee consists of the ICYSM’s troika (Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, and Libya), Palestine, Turkiye for the Asian group, Iraq for the Arab group, and Niger for the African group, in addition to the General Secretariat and the relevant OIC institutions including ICYF.
